SAT Krak 2009 - is it possible to have a boom in crisis? SAT Krak 2009 took place in Krakow from October 15 to 17. In the time of crisis, companies usually reduce the variety of offers, delay implementation of costly new products. Does such a situation exist on the broadcast market? The answer must be negative, because the overall slowdown is compensated more than enough by the exchange of technology - it relates both to delivery methods (digitization) and reception equipment (HDTV).
In the era of technological change, it is interesting to participate in such fair that offers a review of the market. The opportunity to familiarize with the offer of distributors, before the season starts, is important both for professionals and consumers.
The list of exhibitors reflects changes in the Polish satellite market. Some companies which suffered the slowdown withdrew from participation in the exhibition, but there were new, with ADB and Humax companies - market leaders in advanced satellite receivers.

DIPOL presented products for professional and consumer market. The professionals were especially interested in the wide range of radial multiswitches from TERRA, ensuring exceptional flexibility (suitable for installations with up to 1000 outlets), in optic fiber equipment for transmission of SMATV/CATV/CCTV signals and Ethernet data, as well as in GSM and UMTS repeaters. All these categories were introduced in 2009. Many consumers visiting our stand were amazed at the array of LCD/plasma mounts.

Tower in a city of smog. In terms of height, the TV tower in the picture is the seventh in the world. Central Television Tower is 405 meters high and was built in 1992.
The city with the tower is one of the fastest growing in the world. The rapid development is connected with emission of industrial smoke and vehicle exhaust fumes, which results in formation of urban smog. The situation has been further exacerbated by cutting down the protective forest belt, which causes vulnerability to sandstorms.

MAC layer - a few words on WiFi - part 8. MAC 802.11 protocol supports two modes of operation: DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function).
DCF provides services using best-effort model, whereas PCF mode is designed to provide support for real-time traffic in wireless networks based on fixed infrastructure.
In 802.11 standard there are available four priority levels that organize access to the transmission medium. The levels are implemented using different IFS (Inter-Frame Space). They are (in order from shortest to longest):
  • SIFS (Short IFS);
  • EIFS (Extended IFS).
Both the PCF and DCF can operate within a single BSS ( Base Service Set ) thanks to allocation of two periods: CFP ( Contention Free Period) and CP (Contention Period). PCF access method has higher priority than DCF, because it can transmit the frame after the PIFS time which is shorter than the DIFS.
Distributed Coordination Function
DCF is the basic mode of operation of 802.11 networks, which does not use any centralized mechanism for controlling access to the medium - all the stations can compete for the access at the same time. As a method of medium access, the DCF mechanism uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) protocol.
The mechanism providing access to the medium is shown in the figure below. A detailed description we will incorporate in the next issue of the newsletter.

Compression connectors for RG-6 cables. The offer of PCT connectors has been extended by a new item - F compression connector E80330 for popular RG-6 cable (E1230_100).

The sectional views perfectly show how the E80330 connector is compressed on the cable. Two compression rings ensure high resistance to break and waterproof termination of the cable. Freely rotating nut with precise thread eliminates the known problems of installers with connecting RF devices equipped with F sockets.

The optical fibers with low water peak used in the pachtcords and pigtails are compliant with ITU-T G.652.D standard. The optical fibers compliant with ITU-T G.652.D are now among the best standard optical fibers on the market. Before introduction of the G.652.D recommendations, optical systems could use one of the three transmission windows with lower attenuation (I: 850 nm, II: 1310 nm, III: 1550 nm).
Systems based on optical fibers with low water peak can work in the whole band from 1280 nm to 1650 nm. It provides full compatibility and ability to perform quality splices with existing fiber-optic networks. The ULTIMODE optical fibers are reinforced by aramid fibers (Kevlar) and covered with PVC sheath.
CCTV analog cameras in IP networks. In many cases application of analog cameras cooperating with video servers is an economic solution.
An example can be the high-speed PTZ camera "PUMA" C4399/FCB-EX1010P M12291 with 36x optical zoom, cooperating with video server ULTINET-701 K2140. The video server converts analog video into compressed (H.264) video stream and encapsulates it into IP packets that (together with audio streams) are transported to the monitoring center. The server also enables transmission of control signals to the PTZ camera.
The data transmission can be performed via twisted pair cable, fiber optic cable (using Ethernet media converters L10021, L11041, L11521, L11525, or L11541), or wireless link (especially recommended equipment - ULTIAIR devices: N2300, N2301, N2310, N2311, N2312, N2313, N2320, N2330).

The system can be further extended by ULTICAM IP cameras and ULTICAM megapixel cameras.
The devices can be run under the control of free client software. There is also available more advanced ULTISYSTEM software that allows to combine devices from different manufactures (e.g. ACTi and IQinVision).

12 questions for those who plan to build CCTV installation - part 1. To be successful, the investment in CCTV system must be carefully planned, implemented under the plan, and finally - the system has to be used correctly. However, most problems may occur at the first stage, directly influencing the next two steps. The EN 50132-7 norm may be the basis for 12 key questions, the answers to which can provide optimum solutions.
  • What types of threats are going to be monitored?
  • Which areas are going to be monitored?
  • What are the aims of monitoring individual areas?
  • What is the required level of automation?
  • What should be the reaction/s of the system in case of violating some individual areas?
  • What is the required data storage period?
  • What are the environmental conditions?
  • What is the anticipated method of system control?
  • What should be the resolution/s (detail) and frame rate/s (smoothness) of the images?
  • What is the sufficient range and security level of signal transmission?
  • How to train security guards?
  • Who and how is going to maintain the system?
1. What types of threats are going to be monitored?
This question must be answered to define the general objectives of the system. Whether the aim is to protect the people, other important values, or only to provide additional information (semi-professional or basic CCTV installations). The answer to the question will allow to choose the category of equipment needed. This will help protect the undertaking from using inappropriate devices, both in terms of quality and economy.

What is the range of wireless data transmission systems using 802.11 equipment? The maximum distance depends on several factors, such as:
  • Mutual visibility of two points - this is the most important factor that determines the range and efficiency of data transmission. Any obstacle, such as trees, buildings, etc. adversely affects the operation and reliability of transmission;
  • Standard, band and channel (interferences etc.);
  • Category of devices - long wireless links should not be based on SOHO devices but only on professional equipment using 802.11a standard. The examples of professional equipment are devices with Mikrotik OS - ULTIAIR.;
  • Maximum output power (EIRP) - limited by national regulations. It is worth remembering that it is better to use an antenna with a higher gain than a more powerful wireless module.
Under favorable conditions (no interference, mutual visibility including Fresnel zone etc.) the limit is about 15 km.
