DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN
No. 17/2008 (May 5, 2008)
Megapixel revolution - IFSEC 2008. From May 12 to 15, 2008, Birmingham will host the most important world security trade fair, IFSEC.
This fair enjoys excellent reputation both among exhibitors and visitors, so it is not affected by the decline of world exhibitions. The whole exhibition space is reserved long before the event. This edition will draw all major companies dealing with security issues.
The perfect location of the exhibition (the whole complex includes Birmingham airport and railroad station) makes the fair more accessible for the public - there are expected more than 30,000 visitors this year. High reputation of the fair is the result of hard work of its organizers. It is recognized as one of the best prepared fairs in the world. Permanent and often updated website promotes the exhibitors all year round. Early enough announced conferences and lectures attract many participants. Clear division of exhibition space into sections makes it easy for visitors to find what they are looking for.
This year the main topics include: RFID &Smartcards, Counter Terror, Access Control and Security Solutions, CCTV Village, IP &Networks, Security Guarding &Support Services, Intruder Alarms &Physical Security, Fire Solutions. Due to participation of all major manufacturers, the fair is an indicator of technological developments and trends for the near future.

Looking through advertisements in magazines and fair announcements, we may expect in video surveillance technology:
  • significant increase of the share of megapixel cameras. Wider use of these cameras will gradually supplant speed dome cameras,
  • migration to MPEG-4 with H.264 codec in all IP CCTV devices including DVRs,
  • dominance of WDR sensors in analog cameras,
  • integration of CCTV and access control systems.

Taps, splitters, and amplifiers from Terra. Terra company, a leading manufacturer of multiswitches, also provides a number of useful products that allow to build multiswitch systems more effectively.

Amplifiers - are designed to amplify SAT IF signals in systems based on 5-input and 9-input multiswitches.
Amplifiers for multiswitch systems.

Taps and splitters - are used in multiswitch installations for distributing signals from trunk lines. One trunk line (four coaxial cables) carries four signals from one Quatro LNB. Taps also distribute terrestrial TV signals. Taps are equipped with DC-transition switches that in "ON" position run current through "H" paths to both branches. In "OFF" position it is possible only within one path.
Splitters - allow to divide the system into subnetworks.

Below - examples of multiswitch systems employing Terra amplifiers, taps and splitters.

Use of splitters: the most flexible multiswitch installations in multi-story buildings are based on 9-cable system (signals from two Quatro LNBs and terrestrial TV antenna). On each floor the splitter provides signals to multiswitches. It allows to shape the network according to actual requirements.

Use of amplifiers, taps and splitters: due to large subnetworks, in both main branches there are employed SA-901 (R70901) amplifiers.
The branches are formed by SS-504 (R70515) splitters.
The SS-510 (R70516) taps are used for distributing signals from trunk lines.
Encrypted connection with PiXORD P4504 video server. When connecting with IP CCTV device via Internet browser, there is a risk that someone could take control over the device. Of course the risk of hacking into such a device is low, but there are CCTV systems that perform highly responsible tasks (e.g. in a bank - remote viewing and control over PTZ cameras) and the system should provide the highest security possible. Interference into the system like switching off local recording or changing IP address (lack of recording on NVR) would pose a dire threat.
The video server PiXORD P4504 (K2132) enables the administrator to configure it to use SSH technology. Due to application of https port (443), it is practically impossible to carry out man-in-the-middle attack. This type of connections is used in e-banking.

ULTIMAX - DVRs for demanding customers - backup of archives for legal purposes. Possibility of copying recorded video onto various storage media is one of the main demands for modern DVRs. ULTIMAX recorders have been equipped with USB2.0 interface that is used for connecting DVD-RW, HDD, or USB flash drive.
There is also possibility of connecting DVD-RW with SATA interface.
ULTIMAX family provides very useful function - possibility of direct backup of data to specified (backup) disc. The backup disc is one of the installed discs, specially designated for this purpose. The recorded data can be viewed only with special software. The disc is protected against accidental formatting in the DVR.
Backup can be done according to the date and time, or alarm events, directly playing back and marking interesting fragments, or making around-the-clock copy (from one day). There is also possibility of setting time period and channels that will be automatically saved after the system is switched off and switched on again.

IP CCTV networks - client-server architecture. When the numbers of viewers and cameras in the system are large, a good solution is client-server architecture.
This architecture allows to build very efficient installations where cameras and video servers are connected to one or more servers. The servers are responsible for managing the system, the clients connect only with them.
The main advantage of this solution is isolation of cameras and the links between the cameras and servers from outgoing traffic. There is no risk of overloading the main part of the system in the case of excessive number of clients. Additionally, extension of the system by connecting next cameras and servers does not affects client stations which are capable of connecting to many servers at the same time.
The only problem of this architecture may be a failure of the managing server, which would break connection between cameras and clients. It can be overcome by using highly reliable servers.

New megapixel camera from ACTi. The new product of one of the leading manufacturers of IP cameras - ACTi - marked as ACM-4200 (K1510) belongs to megapixel group. Its 1.3 Mpix (1280 x 1024) resolution means three times more pixels in comparison with standard CCTV cameras. The employed CMOS sensor allows operation from 0.5 lx level without day/night function. Implementation of MPEG-4 codec allows to transmit and record images of 1.3 Mpix resolution without high bandwidth and disc space requirements. Below we compare this camera with a product of another leading manufacturer.

A new and quick - 802.11n. The draft 802.11n wireless standard utilizes advanced MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology that incorporates antenna arrays. The devices can use several channels that also means higher throughputs. DIPOL has extended the offer of TP-Link devices by a new series of draft 2.0 wireless cards, which will be compatible with the target 802.11n standard. The cards (wireless adapters): PCI TL-WN851N (N3271), miniPCI TL-WN861N (N3261), and USB TL-WN821N (N3221) allow to reach transfers up to 300 Mbps, and are fully compatible with standard IEEE802.11b/g devices. They are perfectly prepared for cooperation with TP-Link TL-WR841ND router (N3251), which is also compliant with 802.11n draft 2.0.
