DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN

No. 41/2008 (Dec. 8, 2008)
Waiting for 4G. 4G (Fourth-Generation) is a term that describes the next level of development of wireless communication based on cellular networks.
Greater opportunities will be created by faster transmission of data and QoS mechanisms (Quality of Service - specified level of transmission parameters). Very fast data transmission is needed to offer broadband Internet access, multimedia, video chat, mobile TV - including the option of HD broadcasts, other services that require downloading and uploading large data streams.
The 4G project, managed by the ITU, is very ambitious - receiving data at speeds up to 1 Gbit/s in fixed locations, and 100 Mbit/s in the case of terminals moving at high speeds (e.g. in a car), smooth handoffs/handovers between cells, global roaming on the assumption that the speed of transmission between any points in the world does not fall below 100 Mbit/s, packet data transmission based only on IP protocols, compatibility with existing standards used in cellular networks.
The way towards 4G includes a number of experimental solutions based on Flash-OFDM, WiMax, WiBro, iBurst and 3GPP Long Term Evolution technologies.
An example of intensive work on LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the solution of Agilent Technologies Inc., implementing BER encoding in duplex system with time division (TTD) and using multi-antenna MIMO technology - 2 x 2 and 4 x 4. TTD-LTE solutions are designed for wireless systems requiring highest transmission speeds.
Potential predominance of LTE solutions over comparable - in terms of speed - mobile WiMax systems is the prospect of their application in mobile networks, infrastructure of which is already present in the entire "civilized" world.
One of experimental LTE networks, with transfer of up to 150 Mbit/s, is planned to be built next year (based on the hardware from Ericsson), but a widespread development is possible in the years 2010 - 2011, after adoption of the final standard and commercial introduction of dedicated processors. The largest American mobile operators (Bell, T-Mobile and Verizon) intend to start LTE networks in 2010.

Easier construction of large installations - new radial multiswitches. Many installers prefer the simplicity and convenience associated with the construction of installations based on radial multiswitches. Such an installation consists in connecting signals from LNBs and star distribution cables from the multiswitch.
So far, these types of multiswitch systems were carried out mainly in one-family homes and small private houses. The problem was the lack of high-quality radial multiswitches allowing to connect up a few dozen subscribers to one multiswitch.
New multi-output radial multiswitches from TERRA, e.g. 32-out MSR-532 and MSV-532 make it possible to build large installations in multi-family houses.
Multiswitches of MSV series can be used in large networks for multi-staircase buildings, due to combined level adjustment in the lower band (both polarizations) and in the upper band (both polarizations). This feature makes it simple to optimize the symbol error rate for all transponders.

There are available the following TERRA multiswitches:

ULTIMAX - recording of city council meetings and video monitoring of the city hall in Sandomierz. The investor is interested in solution that allows to record video and sound from city council meetings, as well as can protect the building. The system should provide high quality video and audio, all for a reasonable price.
At the request of the city authorities, DIPOL's representatives from the branch in Sandomierz presented the potential of the 3rd Generation ULTIMAX DVR that awarded a Gold Medal at Intertelecom 2008.
The DVR cooperated with high-resolution SN-580CA M11215 day/night cameras from Sunnell, with 2.8-12 mm M2137 lenses of Japanese COMPUTAR, and two condenser microphones Audio-Technika PRO 37, connected via Tapco MIX120 audio mixer.
The ULTIMAX DVR, thanks to OggVorbis (16kbps) audio compression, H.264 video codec, and advanced RTOS - fulfilled the requirements of the authorities: high quality images (4CIF), smooth video (25 fps), and long recording time (80 days). Other offers were much more expensive or did not reach the required parameters. The system can be easily extended in the future - ULTIMAX DVRs can operate in a network and share the video and audio, accessible via a number of computers.

Camera housings - the often overlooked components of CCTV systems. Every camera operating in changeable weather conditions has to be equipped with suitable outdoor housing. The housing should have a heater with thermostat. The elements ensure proper operating conditions of the camera-lens set.
In the case of "bare" housing, except summer, there is a big risk of fogging up the pane and lenses, and condensation of steam even on metal and other parts of the housing and the enclosed camera. Higher-class housings are also equipped with fans that equalize the inside temperature.

Due to specific installation conditions (easy access to the camera, connection of the power and video cable/s), one may choose the Marathon side-opening housings - M5406 (12VDC), M54141(230VAC), or the sliding versions: M5405 (12VDC), M5415 (230VAC).
The main advantage of Marathon housings is very high quality - they are made of powder-painted aluminum alloy, and conform to IP66 class (they are tested in special chamber). They can also be easily mounted on a wall (with additional wall mounts M5140 or M5142), or on a post (with double post clamp M5162).
An example traditional housing - the cable is sensitive to intentional damage (on the left).
Marathon housings - the cable put into the mount is protected against damage
and special double post mount M5162 makes it easy to mount cameras (on the right).
Five times more pixels than in analog cameras - ULTICAM DS-852MF-E. IP camera ULTICAM DS-852MF-E K1441 has 2 Mpix image sensor. The camera provides MPEG-4 video stream. It can send UXGA images (1600x1200) at 12.5 fps, or HD720p (1280x720), SVGA (800x600) and lower-resolution video at 25 fps.
Megapixel camera ULTICAM DS-852MF-E is equipped with 1/3" CMOS sensor of 0.55 lx (F1.2) sensitivity. It can cooperate with a varifocal lens (without AI) with C/CS mount. The camera is also equipped with SD flash memory card slot, allowing local recording of motion-triggered events.

Apart from resolution and frame rate, the user can set:
  • image quality,
  • kind of frame,
  • type of stream,
  • bitrate parameters,
  • repeatability of "I" frames,
  • maximum bitrate - aside from the preset values, it can be set freely, up to 8 Mbps.

A cheaper version of the camera (K1440) can provide UXGA (1600x1200) images at 5fps. Both models coperate with ULTISYSTEM - a powerful surveillance software allowing to integrate local CCTV systems with city surveillance.

Megapixel IP surveillance installation in schools. ACTi megapixel network cameras have been installed in a school district in Union, Missouri, to provide security at the high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. The school district decided to install the ACTi megapixel cameras when they realized that the cost of megapixel equipment was practically similar to analog solution. The cameras provide much more detailed images that allow to identify people and spot even the smallest objects.
The installation is based on ACTi ACM-3401 K1314 cameras. The high school has about 50 cameras inside and 20 outside buildings, the middle school - 42 cameras, and the elementary schools are equipped with 5 cameras.
These numbers allow to cover all important places, considerably improving security levels in the schools and surrounding areas. All the schools except one elementary school are linked by fiber-optic cables.

We will publish the descriptions in consecutive issues of our DIPOL Weekly Review. The reward for the company will be free advertising. We will also award every report published in DIPOL Weekly Review with "chameleon" mug.
We have written about:

How to use wireless connectivity to develop the network at home or office. Internet access is nowadays indispensable at home and office. It can be easily distributed among many users by wireless means. If the connection is provided by the ISP (cable TV, DSL, or other operator) via Ethernet interface (for example cable modem with RJ-45 socket), the user will need suitable router, e.g. TL-WR542G N2950 (54 Mbps) or N2953 (108 Mbps)...
