New impulses in consumer electronics - CES 2010.

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is a barometer of trends in consumer electronics. The reputation of the largest exhibition event in this field, excellent media coverage and the rich American market encourage producers to demonstrate new products there. Let's recall the history - it was the place of first appearance of video cassette recorder (VCR) in 1970, camcorder and CD player - in 1981, DVD - in 1996, HDTV - in 1998, Xbox - in 2001, Blu-ray player - in 2004.
The last year's fair was the harbinger of poor market conditions - not much new products, the stagnation in the number of stands. Outwardly, this year is not better - the number of exhibitors fell by 200 (to 2500). Is it really worse? Definitely not! The driving force behind a revival are 3D technology and tablets.
Let's begin with tablet - it is a product filling the niche between a PC and TV, allowing for watching movies, reading books and using the Internet. One of the tablets was presented by Steve Ballmer - the CEO of Microsoft. Tablets significantly expand the capacities of popular e-readers. The information that in 2009 Amazon sold more e-books than traditional books and about significant advancement of Google in the preparations for electronic versions of paper editions, is a good foundation for the tablet market.
Fumio Ohtsubo, president of Panasonic Corp. appeared in a live feed from Osaka, Japan, with a new, integrated 3D camcorder. The device priced at $21000 will go on sale in April.

The real breakthrough, however, can become the 3D technology. While in the last year there were shown individual 3D TVs without necessary support and equipment, this year's presentation could surprise the public with its completeness and multitude of implementations. They included: 3D TVs (Panasonic, Sony, LG, Samsung), 3D camcorders (Panasonic), Blu-ray 3D (Samsung), laptops (MSI, Asus), gaming consoles (Sony).
New hardware comes with the announcement of broadcasting 3D content planned for June, made by the U.S. DirecTV platform (in cooperation with Panasonic), and similar statement of ESPN on transmitting 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D. Samsung with Dreamworks and Sony with Discovery Channel plan to produce at least twenty 3D feature films already in 2010.
It was an extraordinary event that a new technology got such an impressive head start. It seems that the success of Avatar articulates the consumer needs to watch 3D productions at home - the opportunity which the producers have been waiting for, with technical solutions ready to implement.

We suggest to look at the list of products awarded at CES in nine categories - most of them will become market bestsellers in this year. The "Best in Show Award" went to Panasonic for its VT25 3D television. Panasonic also introduced the largest 3D plasma TV in the world, with diagonal of 152 inches (about 3.8 m) and native resolution of 4096 × 2160 pixels.

"Engagingly about antennas" - IX DIPOL Holiday Photo Contest 2010.

The entries will be accepted from June 1 to September 30, but the photos can be taken any time, also during this severe winter.
At first the subject seems to be a very tough challenge. What can be interesting in antennas? But we hope the competitors will take up the task that, apart from having aesthetic qualities, requires dash of imagination, grain of wit, and sometimes a certain measure of risk. Test your talents! Below there are several photos from the last year's edition.

Management and monitoring of large cable television systems - optical node Terra OD-120.

If TV signal is transmitted over distances of several tens of kilometers and to many places, the system has to provide remote control and supervision over the work of optical nodes.
This feature is available in the case of optical nodes Terra OD-120 R81724. Remote management and monitoring of the nodes are performed via Ethernet network (and the Internet) using SNMP v2c protocol.

The free OD Explorer software provides temperature measurement and control of several key parameters:
  • input optical power,
  • RF output power,
  • attenuation of the built-in attenuators or activation of AGC (Automatic Gain Control),
  • alarm levels (for optical and RF signals)
In addition, using Ethernet connection the optical node may have additional functions in the building:
  • monitoring of alarm system in the place of installation (cabinet etc.)
  • monitoring of UPS,
  • resetting the system by disconnecting power.
Optical node OD-120 can cooperate with the MMH-3000 R81700 headend. The signal from the headend is converted into optical form with optical transmitter MOS-211B R81720B and transmitted via optic fiber to the optical node. The node converts optical signal into RF electrical signal distributed via coaxial cabling.
The optical node accepts optical signal in the wavelength range 1100 to 1600 nm and input level -7 to 2 dBm. Its output frequency range is the standard 47-862 MHz band.

Designing multiswitch system with 128 outlets.

Multiswitch system with more than 100 outlets is a major challenge for both designers and installers. For its proper functioning it is necessary to carefully design the system and use high quality components and cables that ensure the rated parameters. All these criteria are easily met by using the solutions proposed by TERRA, the company which provides a full range of equipment and software for designing multiswitch systems.
In the first stage one should make the scheme of the installation. For example, let's choose the solution to bring the signal from two satellites to eight staircases with 16 apartments. The system is based on MSV-916 R70866 multiswitches and SA-901 R70901 amplifiers.
Scheme of multiswitch installation
in a large building
With the SS-904 TV/SAT splitter, the network has been divided into 2 subnetworks. All devices deployed in the subnetwork are powered via H lines from SA-901 R70901 amplifier. Each staircase employs MSV-916 R70866 multiswitch and tap (the latter except the last staircase in the subnetwork). Taps with different attenuation allow to equalize signal levels in individual staircases. Due to long cables, it s indispensable to use cable attenuation compensation implemented in SA-901 amplifiers.
A fragment of network design performed with SatNet 2.0 program
To calculate the balance of the network and the signal levels in the outlets you can use free SatNet 2.0 application available at DIPOL FTP server. This program developed by engineers from TERRA allows to make any design based on the high-quality equipment - quickly and effectively.
For those who like presentations, it has been prepared SatNet tutorial (2.55 MB).

Precise Day/Night camera with privacy zones and motion detection.

Day &Night cameras often have problems with switching into B/W mode when their field of view encompasses bright spots - the images are snowy and do not allow to identify people. This phenomenon occurs when monitored areas include brightly lit shop windows, streets and passages with strong lighting etc.
The new u-cam 552 M11227 camera is a top-level product. By using a very good SONY Super HAD CCD II sensor and with the possibility of setting image parameters in the camera MENU, the images are of the highest quality. The camera produces a natural-color rendition of the original scene and, thanks to a high resolution of the video (550 TVL), it is possible to distinguish fine details. Due to high sensitivity (0.1 lx), the camera can successfully operate in low-light conditions, providing color images without visible noise.
The camera has an OSD menu enabling the user to precisely adjust image parameters to the lighting conditions in which the camera works. The menu allows to configure AGC, BLC, privacy and motion detection zones. In addition, the user can precisely adjust the switching point from color to black and white mode.
The camera has a very good performance, so the user should remember to choose a lens that creates sharp and undistorted image. Our offer includes high quality Tokina lenses.

Multimedia home based on future-oriented 802.11n standard. The 802.11n standard enables data transfer speeds up to 300 Mbps, which perfectly meets the needs for transmission of home multimedia. Wireless transfers of music or video to a laptop connected wirelessly can take much less time than sending the same files with the use of a wired "Fast Ethernet" connection. The 802.11n devices are compatible with the older 802.11b and 802.11g equipment, so the 802.11n router will cooperate with 802.11b and 802.11g wireless cards. All devices of TP-Link using "n" standard comply with Draft 2.0.
