DIPOL Weekly Review - TV and SAT TV, CCTV, WLAN

No. 7/2010 (Feb. 15, 2010)

The goal of the Chinese mobile TV operator - 10 million users in 2010.

In January this year, China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was covering 280 Chinesse cities with its mobile TV service based on CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting). Broadcasting in the new technology started in 2008 during the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Late last year, CBC had approximately 3.5 million subscribers, by the end of this year it is expected to have 10 million customers. Over the next five years the number of subscribers to the CBC should reach 100 million.
Basing on the CMMB infrastructure, it is planned to launch additional services, including e-payments and navigation. CBC already offers navigation service in 10 major Chinese cities.
Mobile access to TV broadcasts monthly costs about $2, but due to promotional campaign the customers who purchase selected terminals have a free subscription for three years.
Samsung SCH-B540 - hybrid S-DMB mobile phone (for Korean satellite-terrestrial mobile TV system)
CMMB is the equivalent to the DVB-SH, which is a hybrid standard of digital television transmission from the satellite to mobile receivers, with the use of terrestrial transmitters to cover the urban areas.
The system based on IP protocol allows "multicast" and "unicast" transmissions. This allows more than a 100-fold reduction in transmission costs, compared to the usual media streaming based on cellular base stations. A huge advantage of this method is immediate coverage of the whole territory (outdoors).
CMMB uses S band (2635 - 2660 MHz) for satellite transmission and UHF band (470 - 862 MHz) for terrestrial transmission. In the former case, the 25 MHz wide band comprises 25 TV channels, 30 radio channels, and additional channels of data. The bandwidth of the UHF channels is 2 or 8 MHz, depending on the size of the data stream. The transmissions provide video with QCIF (176 × 144) or QVGA (320 x 240) resolution. Return channel is implemented in a traditional way, using cellular telephony system.
Mobile TV in China is also available in broadcasting version, based on the DMB-T/H standard (Digital Multimedia Broadcast-Terrestrial/Handheld).

CeBIT 2010 - "Connected Worlds".

This year's global IT and telecommunications trade fair in Hanover will be held from 2-6 March. About 4300 exhibitors from 69 countries and some 400000 visitors attended the last year's event.
Trade fairs reflect market trends: in times of prosperity are experiencing boom, during a crisis they show declining interest of industry to present new products, as well as fewer traders come to see the new offer.
The dominant theme of this year's CeBIT will be "Connected Worlds".
Under this concept, there are distinguished the most promising fields of technology and their applications:
  • Connected Living - use of telecommunications and information technology in the household (home networking);
  • Broadband World - modern applications for business, the public sector and society, based on broadband access to the Internet;
  • Webciety@CeBIT - new concepts for websites;
  • Destination ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) - issues related to navigation, traffic control, security, telemetry;
  • RFID - logistic systems, identification and access control systems based on RF technology;
  • TeleHealth - use of communication techniques for remote diagnostics and health monitoring.
Will the crisis come to an end this year?
The answer can be found in our report in the Newsletter on March 8, 2010.

How to receive programs from satellite pay-TV platform throughout the home, using a single smart card?

To receive channels of a SECA MediaGuard digital platform on several TVs (up to 8), the subscribers of Cyfra+ (Poland), Digital+/Astra (Spain), Canal Digitaal (Holland), CanalSat (France), Meo (Portugal) can use single smart card (and subscription) but as many suitable sat receivers as the number of TVs, each equipped with Wireless Client Card for Clone+ (A9911). The original smart card is not put to any receiver, but to the central unit - Clone+ Wireless Smart Card Splitter (A9910) - which wirelessly transfers subscription rights to the Clone+ client cards.

Example of practical application: two Quatro LNBs (A98257) connect with R70808 multiswitch (via eight coaxial cables TRISET-113 E1015). In the diagram below, the inputs of the multiswitch connected with the second LNB (for a second satellite) are not visible (they are physically placed in the second row, behind the first). Possible application of two-tuner PVR receivers requires to install two TRISET-113 E1015 cables from the multiswitch to the R694140 outlets. This will enable simultaneous viewing of one program and recording of another. The example installation distributes signals for three "single" receivers and one two-tuner receiver.

The cables used:
  • Triset-113 E1015 - TV/satellite cable for indoor applications,
  • Triset-113 PE E1017 - TV/satellite cable for outdoor applications,
  • CAMSET solo M6000 - coaxial cable between the CCTV camera and RF modulator.

On every TV set connected to the individual receiver, the users can choose and watch any of terrestrial TV or satellite programs from the pay-TV platform, and additionally - the image from the analog CCTV camera.

Mobile reception of satellite TV - not only FTA channels.

For those who value the opportunity to watch favorite satellite channels not only at home but also outside, we can recommend Opticum X550 A99436 satellite receiver. The receiver is normally powered from external power supply (12 VDC output), being the first sat receiver on the market with the possibility of DC supply (for example from car battery - via cigarette lighter receptacle etc.) and use of a smart card as well as Conditional Access Module (Common Interface).
Opticum HD X550 is an absolute novelty on the market. The price and potential make it one of the most attractive satellite receivers. It enables the user to receive digital satellite programs both in HD and SD formats. The USB2.0 interface allows to record programs onto an external storage device (PVR function), e.g. A99400 hard drive.

The receiver Opticum X550 A99436 features an elegant design and compact size
During the ongoing Winter Olympics in Vancouver mobile satellite receivers are used by truck drivers while waiting for customs clearance, during weekend breaks and rest periods (tachograph).
Of course the user has to complete the receiving set with a dish and an LNB. To receive SD channels, also encrypted, it is sufficient to precisely align the A9535 dish. The dish is characterized by easy installation and a convenient packing. In the case of HD channels, the user should employ a much larger dish.

Is it possible to replace the lens in a ceiling camera?

Ceiling cameras are normally offered with built-in lenses, usually with 3.6 mm focal length. In practical applications the installer often needs to exchange the lens to another one, with different focal length. Before buying the required lens, he must know the type of the lens mount.
CCTV cameras can be equipped with two types of lenses - with CS/C mount or CS-M mount with thread diameter of 13 mm. CS lenses are designed mainly for box cameras (cameras normally sold without lenses), but are also used in high-quality ceiling cameras, e.g. V-CAM 515 + IR M10751. CS-M lenses are used primarily in board cameras, so they dominate the group of ceiling cameras (example: V-CAM 412 M10744).

Quick adapter to DC 2.1/5.5 power connector and professional compression BNC connector.

S-55 quick adapter (E3511) and BNC connector E8282 are indispensable accessories for professional installers of CCTV systems.
The quick adapter ensures easy and stable connection of power cable to any CCTV camera. To mount the plug, the installer should strip the wires, push them into terminals and tighten the two screws with a screwdriver.
BNC connectors can be the cause of many problems in the implementation of CCTV systems, already at the installation stage. It is due to uncertain connections. The situation is even worse in the case of outdoor installations, where various weather conditions (including temperature changes and water penetration) accelerate the speed of corrosion. It deteriorates the quality of video monitoring or even stops operation of the channel.
Compression BNC connectors are a breakthrough in video surveillance. The installer using the connectors demonstrates the highest professionalism, ensuring reliable connections and continuous signal transmission.

Distinguishing features of compression BNC connectors:
  • wide operating band - up to 2 GHz (!),
  • connecting/disconnecting operations do not influence connection quality (can be even used in measurement equipment),
  • waterproof termination of the cable,
  • resistance to corrosion - made of non-ferrous metals and highest-quality dielectric,
  • very low loss in the whole operating band (CCTV applications - baseband video <0.1 dB),
  • perfect matching to the transmission line within the whole operating band (CCTV applications - baseband video - VSWR<1.03),
  • simple and quick assembly: longitudinal compression,
  • properly compressed connection is highly resistant to break,
  • to be compressed with PCT-AIO-CT E80077 compressing tool, also suitable for compression F connectors.

Modernization of video surveillance system in a hospital in Taiwan.

Opened ten years ago En-Zhu-Gong hospital in Taiwan decided to replace the existing analog CCTV system with a modern IP CCTV system.
The main purpose was to increase the safety of the patients and visitors. The older system did not ensure adequate video quality. It was very difficult to recognize people's faces from the recorded material.
For protecting the privacy of the patients, the IP cameras have been installed only in the nursing service center and hallways of sickroom floors. On the eight floors there have been deployed 32 ACM-1311 K1117 cameras. This model provides images even in total darkness, due to built-in IR illuminator. The whole system has been integrated by the Enterprise NVR software. It allows a further extension to other floors and the use of megapixel cameras.

Easier installation due to standard solutions - RACK cabinets.

In everyday practice, 19" RACK standard for devices and dedicated RACK cabinets have been used for years now in telecommunications, IT systems, stage equipment, laboratories etc.
Aesthetic and functional RACK cabinets are designed for mounting all sorts of devices in standard 19" (482.6 mm) housings. The unit "U"- 1.75" (44.45 mm) allows to standardize the heights of the equipment mounted in the 19" RACK cabinets. The capacity of any RACK cabinet is given in the "U" units.
RACK cabinets are suitable for mounting all sorts of devices compliant with19" standard. They are ideal for installing headends, switches, servers, optical devices. The cabinet can also house devices that are not in standard 19" rack housings, for example multiswitches, RF amplifiers, modulators, DVRs. However, the installer has to ensure proper operating temperature in accordance with the specifications of the devices (usually with additional ventilation shelf).
