Does the crisis end? - CeBIT 2010.
The world's largest trade fair for IT and telecommunications was held in Hanover between March 2 and 6, 2010. 4157 companies represented 68 countries. For comparison, in 2009 there were 4292 exhibitors, in 2008 - 5800.Over 100 companies returned to the fair after last year's absence, including AMD, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens. Over 300 other companies came for the first time - among them Google and Amazon. So the statistics seems to be rather optimistic, the decline in the number of exhibitors this year amounted to only 3%, while in the last year was as high as 25%.
Unfortunately, appearances can be deceptive.
Four large exhibition halls were closed, many stands did not have commercial character - the exhibitors took part in the event only because of subsidies. Plenty of space was occupied by exhibitions highlighting artistic achievements (International Forum Design). Crisis in European production had been evident in recent years, this year's fair confirmed another trend - for many producers Europe is no longer a priority market.
Due to bureaucratic barriers to the adoption of standards, many technologies still cannot be used on our continent. This applies, for example, to mobile TV, there are considerable delays in HD television, but also in fiber optic technology.
For this reason, Samsung - the leader in new technologies which presented a lot of new products at CES in Las Vegas - did not have its stand at CeBIT. Many other large companies were represented only by their German or European subsidiaries.
Does the crisis end? -Some think yes, but others are skeptical about it. | In the next issue we will present a report on technical innovations at CeBIT 2010. | |||
Quo vadis Europe? |
They are building the highest tower in the world in a seismically active region.
After the tragic earthquakes in Haiti and Chile there are doubts about the safety of building structures. In this situation, a major challenge is to build the tower shown in the picture below. The tower will be opened in 2012 and is to be 634 m high. It is worth to note that the current world's highest tower has a height of 610 m and is located in Guangzhou (China). The new tower is being built in one of the most dangerous regions in terms of seismic activity in the world.Where are they building the new highest TV tower? The answer at the end of this issue.
Multimedia solution for theaters, concert halls, clubs and pubs.
During shows, concerts etc. the ability to monitor what is happening on the stage is a very valuable feature. The images are also invaluable in the wings and technical areas of the facilities, and in the case of clubs etc. - in other rooms for guests, without direct visibility of the stage. The owner of one of Krakow's jazz clubs required an installation for distribution of two video signals (from analog camera monitoring the scene and from multimedia player) to a network with three television receivers. An additional condition was the ability to easily switch between the two sources of signal, without a need of using individual remote controls of the televisions.
Other typical application is the choice between terrestrial and cable TV. The switch allows to connect the two sources of signal without a risk of interference (it happens that DVB-T transmitters and cable TV networks use the same channels).
Ferguson Ariva HD player 110 A99391 can be the center of every modern home theater. The media player allows to play full HD movies, MKV H.264 files, HD recordings from cameras, high resolution digital images - to watch them on the screen of a connected HD TV set. In addition, it enables the user to play digital music files in the highest quality, also in Free Lossless Audio Codec format (.flac). With support for various data communication protocols, the device allows to play files downloaded from the Internet and home computer network, from USB and NAS hard drives, USB and flash drives (MS/MMC/SD/SDHC), digital video cameras, as well as from external DVD drives.
The information coded in model numbers of ULTIMODE optical devices.
ULTIMODE is a family of professional devices for optical data transmission. It consists of devices that convert baseband analog CCTV signals (video converters) or Fast Ethernet and Giga Ethernet signals (media converters) to optical signals.Main features of the ULTIMODE family:
- cooperation with dedicated type of optical fiber (single-mode or multimode),
- transmission type (duplex or simplex),
- transmission speed (10/100 Mb/s or 1 Gb/s),
- wavelength (I - 850 nm, II - 1310 nm, III - 1550 nm),
- maximum transmission distance (0.55; 2; 20; 40 km).
M - media converter
40 - maximum transmission distance (in kilometers)
3 - wavelength/transmission type (3 - 1310 nm, 5 - 1550 nm, 7 - WDM transmission)
M - transmission speed (M- 10/100 Mb/s, G - 10/100/1000 Mb/s)
V - video converter
20 - maximum transmission distance (in kilometers)
4 - number of video inputs
DAO - transmission of additional signals (D - data, A - audio, O - alarm)

- Crimping tool HT-210N J9210 (for RJ45 connectors),
- Cable tester (RJ45, RJ-11) N7055 - testing cable continuity, detecting shorts circuits and incorrect connections. The device can be used for UTP/FTP cables terminated with RJ-45 connectors or for telephone cables terminated with RJ-11 phone plugs.
Wireless CCTV systems - good practice guidelines (part 3).
In the previous issues we dealt with bandwidth and range concerns. Knowing these two parameters we can answer the question how many cameras can be connected to the single wireless link.In practice the number varies from 5 to15 (for 1.5 km link). This depends on the type of radio transmitting equipment, as well as on the type of cameras, that is, their resolution and compression used.
For example, the necessary bandwidth for IP camera with MJPEG compression may be as high as 6 Mb/s, but with MPEG-4 compression will be approximately 2 Mb/s. The bandwidth demand of a megapixel camera can reach up to 15 Mb/s, while a simple VGA camera with VHS image quality will need only 1 Mb/s. So it is impossible to unambiguously determine the bandwidth requirements - they depend on each particular case.
To avoid possible problems with the equipment, it is recommended to use thoroughly tested devices. There are well functioning monitoring systems based on such equipment, e.g. video surveillance system in Myslenice, Poland, with IP speed dome cameras ACTi K1215 perfectly cooperating with ULTIAIR access points, or the megapixel video surveillance system in Tvrdosin, Slovakia, based on ULTICAM cameras and ULTIAIR access points.
In conclusion - wireless solutions are certainly cheaper than wired ones, and the installation is much faster. However, it is important to realize the limitations and problems that can be encountered in the design, configuration and operation stages.
ULTIAIR devices are characterized by short delays and high throughput. They operate in unlicensed 5GHz band - no special permissions are needed. ULTIAIR devices can operate as base or client stations, they employ reliable Mikrotik system.
This 16-channel DVR allows to record video with resolution of 4CIF at the speed of 2 fps. The number of frames and the resolution can be set separately for each camera. The highest resolution is only used to record images from the entrance to the premises, which enables identification of car license plates and faces of people. The images from other cameras record images of 2CIF resolution (704 x 288) at 12 fps.
At the gate and the gateway there are mounted V-CAM 412 M10744 cameras in vandal proof housings. The images from the cameras are recorded only in the case of motion detection in their fields of view.
Simple graphical menu of the DVR allows to quickly configure the recording schedule (continuous/event triggered).
In the future, alarm inputs and outputs of the DVR are to be connected to control systems of heating, air conditioning and other facilities, providing elements of a "smart home".
The owner is satisfied with the implemented system.

"Tokyo Sky Tree" - Japan.
The tower being built in the capital is primarily dedicated to mobile solutions. Significantly in excess of Tokyo skyscrapers, the transmitters on the tower will allow good signal penetration in the downtown. It is also a part of the preparations towards digital broadcasting in Japan (in July 2011, the current analog broadcasting will be switched to digital transmission). The designers took care of adequate protection of the tower from earthquakes and probably did it properly - during the recent earthquake which took place in February this year, with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale, the only failure was bursting of a water pipe.
